Evangelism with Elder Jeanette Coleman

What is Evangelism?

➢ The spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness.

➢ Zealous (having zeal-fervent, passionate, enthusiastic, etc.) advocacy of a cause.

This can be any cause- What are you an evangelist of? A certain model car? Sports? The best weave? Fashion? Your job?

➢ The winning or reawakening of personal commitments to Jesus.

Evangelism Scriptures

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Acts 1:8-

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

This verse is very familiar to us. It is most likely where we got the term “witnessing” from. How many of you have been witnessing to others? Let’s check according to the meaning of the word.

Witness (verb) 1. To see an event. 2. To give or serve as evidence of; testify to.

Bible dictionary: Open profession or declaration of one’s religious faith through words or actions.

We share the gospel and give testimony to the saving power and goodness of Jesus. Looking deeper into the text, the word witnesses can be translated in the Greek as martyres/martus (mar-toos). You can see the foundation of the word martyr. One source said a witness as unto death. A martyr is one who suffers persecution or death for their beliefs, ultimately the word means witness. This is something to think about in the times we live in now. There is such a hatred toward the church and the things of God.

Examples in the Bible:

Mass Evangelism

Acts 2: 36-41

Verse 37, when they heard they were pricked in their hearts. They heard first, and they wouldn’t have heard with no one to speak.

Peter preaches and three thousand souls were added to the church.

Acts 3- Peter continues to preach Jesus although he faced opposition for it.

The Holy Spirit is our Guide…

One on one evangelism

Philip preached to many people in the city of Samaria (Acts 8) People were healed, delivered from unclean spirits, and baptized. God still had an assignment for him to evangelize one soul. He ministers to a eunuch- Acts 8:26- 39

Philip receives specific instructions. He will tell us exactly what we need to do if we will only listen and obey.

A True Witness for Christ (Martyr)

Stephen dies for preaching Jesus Acts 7: 54-60 (Martyr)

Why are we surprised that some people don’t want to hear the Gospel? Acts 7:57

Stephen stood strong and eventually Saul was converted! Although Saul continued to persecute the church, Stephen’s witness and stand for Christ had to have impacted him.

The scripture said that Saul consented to Stephen’s death in Acts 8:1. As we know he is dealt with later.

The Holy Spirit Seals the Deal…

How a person is converted is God’s business.

Acts 9:1- In this verse Saul was still persecuting the church, breathing threats and murder against the disciples. In Acts 9:20, by the time The Lord finishes dealing with him, verse 20 says; immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God. People were amazed because they knew his background.

You can be a witness by being thankful and bragging on The Lord.

Psalm 105:1

105 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.

Bragging on The Lord may draw someone closer to Him. They may not be interested in anything else you have to say, but may agree that He is good!

Tell people why you have hope when everyone else is falling apart. Share why you have peace in the midst of confusion.

1Peter 3:15-But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Message Bible- 15 Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy.

Sharing your faith may not always be easy, but the Holy Spirit is a helper. He will reveal to you which direction to go for each person as an individual. Evangelism is not a one size fits all model. Each person may have a plan that is custom built for them and you are just strategically placed within it, remember Philip and the eunuch. Think back over your own experience. Who planted the seeds that got you where you are today? Who preached Jesus to you? For some of us, it was our parents that gave us a foundation. When we went astray, we had coworkers, family members, or even strangers who loved us, or invited us to church. Imagine if you were trying to find your way out of a dark cave with no light. You were lost, in despair, and about to give up. Then here comes someone with a simple flashlight. They lead you out of that cave using the light, because without it you couldn’t see anything. It was so dark you couldn’t even see your hand in front of you. Once you’re out they share that they had the light because the same thing happened to them before, in darkness, not able to see the light, and someone came along and helped to rescue them.

Someone else let their light shine as you were being led out of darkness. Whose life lit the way as you stumbled in the dark? Now that you’re free are you lighting the path for someone else? Jesus is The Light of The World (John 8: 12) If we follow Him, we won’t walk in darkness, but have the light of life. Light- (Greek-Phos) from an obsolete, to shine or make manifest: luminousness- fire, light. That which is exposed to the view of all, openly, publicly.

Be the Light!
